JOBS Work Program

The Stark County Department of Job and Family Services JOBS Program provides services to recipients of Ohio Works First (OWF) cash assistance and Food Stamps. Programs are also available to families with dependent children who are below 200% of the federal poverty level. Mission Statement


The JOBS and Child Care Programs value the individual worth of its participants by supporting, guiding, teaching, and assisting families to become self-sufficient citizens of Stark County.

 



JOBS Work Program Components


AssessmentThe Assessment unit assesses individuals’ employability. A Self-Sufficiency Plan is developed to provide guidance to reach employment goals. Work history, education, skills and abilities are reviewed during this process.


Job Club – Job Club is a job-readiness activity conducted in a classroom setting. Job Club classes run Monday through Thursday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. New classes begin every three weeks. Interview skills, completion of applications, resume development, and conducting a job search are processes discussed during the Job Club. Job Club participants also are introduced to various employment-related agencies and education and training programs throughout Stark County. Subsidized Employment Program (SEP) – SEP is an incentive program for employers to hire individuals who receive Ohio Works First (OWF) cash assistance. A subsidy is paid to an employer for up to six months for reimbursement of training costs. For more information regarding SEP, please contact:

Work Now – Work Now is Stark County’s work experience program (WEP). Individuals are assigned to work sites to gain work experience and skills in employment areas such as clerical, maintenance, child care, food service, health care, and general labor. Stark County works with both public and private employers to provide work experience opportunities for OWF and Food Stamp participants. For more information about Work Now, please contact:

LEARN – (Linking Employer and Recipient Needs) is a work experience program with the promise of regular employment attached. After successful completion of the LEARN "internship," the employer hires the WEP participant. During the unpaid internship (which can last for up to six months) Stark County covers the hours the participant works under Workers’ Compensation. Work and Training – The Work and Training unit monitors all training and employment activities. The Stark County JOBS Program collaborates with a large source of providers including the city schools’ systems, Stark State College, Kent State Stark Campus, Workforce Initiative Association (WIA), and Goodwill, as well as many others. Individuals who are employed but continue to receive OWF cash assistance and/or Food Stamps receive case management from this unit. For more information on local training programs, please contact:

Learning, Earning, and Parenting (LEAP) – The LEAP Program provides case management to OWF cash recipients who are under the age of 19 years old, pregnant and/or parenting, and have not yet secured a high school diploma or GED. Day care and transportation assistance is available through this program. For more information regarding LEAP, please contact:

Publicly Funded Child Care Programs
