The Stark County Sanitary Engineering Department provides sanitary sewer service to the unincorporated areas of Stark County, plus portions of Summit and Carroll counties, and the villages of East Canton, East Sparta, Magnolia, Meyers Lake and Waynesburg.  The department also provides drinking water to portions of Lake Township, including Greentown and Uniontown.

The Stark County Sanitary Engineer is appointed by the Board of Stark County Commissioners who receive their authority from Section 6117 of the Ohio Revised Code.  The Board established a unified metropolitan sewer district in 1975, combining a number of small districts.  Responsibilities of the district include facilities design, construction oversight, administration, management, operation and maintenance of the system, billing and revenue collection.

As of December 2009, the sanitary sewer portion of the district consists of over 719.6 miles of mainline sewers ranging in size from 8-inch to 66-inch.  The system includes more than 45,000 connections consisting of residential, commercial and industrial accounts.  Eighty five pump stations and 7 wastewater treatment plants are currently operated and maintained by the district.

The district established a water utility in 1990 in Lake Township and as of December 2009, it consists of more than 2,250 connections and includes over 45 miles of transmission mains and a 750,000 gallon elevated storage tank.
